Pendulum Biography

This Australian drum 'n' bass group significantly aided the worldwide commercial appeal of the genre in the mid-00s. Formed in Perth, Western Australia during 2002 by Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen and Paul Harding, the trio gained recognition in the dance mainstream for their remix of the Prodigy's "Voodoo People" and their UK Top 40 hit "Slam", widely regarded as a drum 'n' bass classic. Combining the traditional drum 'n' bass sound with rock guitar licks, from late 2006 onwards the trio played several live shows using a full band rather than just a DJ set. Their debut, Hold Your Colour, was released in 2005. The album received extensive critical acclaim and as a result developed interest from fans of different types of music owing to the musical diversity on show. Covering various sub-genres such as liquid-funk and breakbeat, the band's trademark heavy bassline was used in a melodic way on "Still Grey" and the title track, while songs such as the reggae-fuelled "Tarantula" demonstrated a much heavier sound. Having established themselves in the UK as one of the most popular drum 'n' bass acts, the band relocated to England where they continued to play regular shows around the country.
